The keynote speaker is Minister Shane McEntee from Department of Agriculture.  Other speakers also include Gerry Bird (OCAE Consultants), Klaus Laitenberger and Dearbháil Ni Chualáin.

During the composting process at our facility near Littleton, Co. Tipperary, biodegradable wastes are broken down into their constituent elements to produce a high quality, nutrient rich compost suitable for use a  soil improver.

Complex organic molecules such as proteins, carbohydrates, DNA, lipids etc. are broken down into sugars, amino acids, fatty acids and other molecules readily available as plant nutrients.

Acorn recently commissioned a German company, Eurofins GeneScan GmBh, to carry out a scan of the compost for any traces of Genetically Modified Organisms.  The results show the compost to be GMO free.

Here at our composting facility we are now producing Class 1 compost which is being sold for a number of uses, mainly as an organic fertiliser and soil improver in agriculture and domestic use. When mixed with soil the compost improves the soil structure and nutrient content resulting in the richer more fertile soil.

As well as our bulk agriculture customers, we are particularly delighted with the response from local household users who collect car trailers of compost from us for garden use.

We are also looking at developing high end markets for the compost such as use as a top dressing on sports turf and are currently taking part in a trial whereby our compost is used to improve the characteristics of sport turf by applying a thin layer.

The purpose of the upcoming open evening at the Acorn Recycling composting facility on 18th May at 19:30, in association with cré, is to show Landscapers and Organic Farmers how quality compost is manufactured and to discuss the many many benefits of its application.  There will be a short presentation on the “Benefits of Using Compost in Organic Farming & Landscaping” by Gerry Bird, who is an Agricultural Science Graduate with a vast body of knowlegeis this field.
